craft cookies

Looking for a fun, creative, and slightly messy craft to do with your kids? Craft cookies are the perfect project! These adorable faux cookies let kids explore textures, colours, and creativity using simple household materials. Plus, they get to enjoy the fun of decorating without the sugar rush!

Mess level: 3

Clean-up level: 3 – put down a craft mat for easy clean-up

What You’ll Need:

  • Cardboard or thick paper (for cookie bases)
  • Shaving cream (for a fluffy, frosting-like texture)
  • White school glue (to help the shaving cream set)
  • Food colouring or paint (to make colourful frosting)
  • Sprinkles—but not the edible kind! Get creative with:
    • Dried pasta
    • Rice
    • Lentils
    • Beads
    • Buttons
    • Real sprinkles (if you want to mix in a little realism!)

How to Make Craft Cookies:

  1. Cut out cookie shapes – Use cardboard or thick paper to cut circles, hearts, or any shape you like.
  2. Make the frosting – Mix shaving cream with a good squeeze of glue and a few drops of food colouring or paint. Stir gently to keep it fluffy!
  3. Frost the cookies – Spread the shaving cream mixture on top of each cardboard cookie.
  4. Add sprinkles – Let kids sprinkle on their choice of materials. Try dried pasta for crunch, lentils for texture, or even beads for a shiny effect!
  5. Let them dry – Leave the cookies to dry for a few hours until the “frosting” hardens.

Why This Activity Is Great:

  • Sensory Exploration – The fluffy shaving cream, rough pasta, and smooth beads make for a wonderful sensory experience.
  • Fine Motor Skills – Sprinkling small items and spreading frosting help develop hand-eye coordination.
  • Open-Ended Creativity – There’s no right or wrong way to decorate these cookies, making it an excellent opportunity for self-expression.
  • Fun Without Sugar Overload – All the decorating fun without the extra sweets!

Craft cookies are an engaging, hands-on activity that kids of all ages can enjoy. Whether you use pasta, rice, lentils, or real sprinkles, the possibilities are endless. So grab some shaving cream, glue, and household odds and ends, and let’s get crafting!
